About the Artists
Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Artist: Bessie Petyarre
Skin name: Petyarre (also spelled Pitjara)
Language group: Anmatyerre
Country: Alhalkere
Region: Utopia, Central Australia
Born: 1971
Bessie began painting in 2005. Her mother, the late Polly Ngale, was one of Utopia's most respected and sought after artists and Bessie is proud to continue on the dot painting tradition.
Her recent works are inspired by three greats, she says; her late father-in-law Kubbitji Kngwarreye, Aunty Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and mother Polly. They depict her country, Alhalkere, and all it encompasses.
"This one; country now".
Alhalkere Country lies in the heart of Central Australia's remote Utopia region. It is where Bessie's Dreamings belong and it is the home of plentiful pencil yams called Atnwelarr and Arlatyeye.
